Summary: The papers collected in this volume present studies in the field of cross-cultural interpretations of Phoenician, Greek, and Roman divinity in the 1st c. BC, spanning a geographic area from the Levant to the Iberian Peninsula. The interpretation of divinity is a cultural phenomenon that is rooted on one hand in the trade and colonization activity of the Greek polis, and on the other hand in the development of the Roman Empire. While this phenomenon has commonly been understood as the expression of the self-acculturation of indigenous groups, and as the means of a systematic homogenization of differences, the contributions in this volume strive to present a more complex and nuanced perspective, based on detailed analysis.
