Hesiod, Theogeny (trans. H. G. Evelyn-White, 139–46).The tradition is also preserved
in the poem Aetna (71–73 [trans. Duff and Duff, 364–365]), attributed to Virgil.
See, for example, Aristophanes, Pax, 73, and Plato Comicus, fragment II, 624 (ed.
Meinecke).
The large hemispherical convex pronotum (fore thorax) and strong stout dentate legs
point to the relationship of this beetle to the complex of Scaraboid beetle families
(dung beetles). The largest European dung beetles belong to the genus Scarabaeus,
characterized by a broad head bearing four to ive triangular protrusions. The small
head, and, above all, presence of tarsi in the forelegs identify this beetle as the rare
Thorectes marginatus. We are grateful to Stefano Ziani of Meldola, Forlì, Italy and
Ariel-Leib-Leonid Friedman of the Department of Zoology, Tel Aviv University, for
their assistance with this identiication.
A beetle also appears as a secondary device to the main element in contemporary
tetradrachms of ancient Abdera (in present-day Greece); see Bernhard 1930, p. 36.
This should not, however, be taken to imply that there was a connection between
the issues.

ZEUS
The image of Zeus depicted here is that of Zeus
Aitnaios, patron god of the Etna mountain, where
one of several mountain cults of Zeus was located.
The association of Zeus with the volcano (which
erupted in either 479 or 475 BCE, shortly before the foundation
of Aitna) is attested by several ancient literary sources, among
them Pindar’s ode to Hieron of Aitna (see p. 11). The particular
representation of Zeus on the Aitna tetradrachm was probably
inspired by an otherwise unknown statue of this deity erected at the
god’s cult site on the summit of the mountain. 7 A Corinthian helmet of
ca. 474 BCE bearing a dedication of Hieron of Aitna to Zeus, which was
discovered at Olympia, is especially interesting in light of the existence
of this mountain cult. 8

was reached by comparing the coin with additional Aitnaean cointypes, as well as with issues from other cities that were most probably
