520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. For the history and archeology of the city of Old Paphos on Cyprus, seat of the Paphic kings and famous for the great Aphrodite sanctuary, the Persian siege ramp at the northeast gate on the Marchellos plateau is of great interest. Here, in a dominant position over the city, the monumental gate, part of the defensive walls with tower and a dry moat form a key point of the ancient city fortifications. Fire remains, weapons finds and a powerful siege ramp bear witness to a war that began shortly after 500 BC. Has taken place. In the ramp up, rubble of a sanctuary that was willfully demolished for the construction of the ramp and that must have stood outside the city came to light. The original location and floor plan of the place of worship can no longer be determined, but it has been possible to capture the structural character and parts of the interior fittings. The unusual complex of finds, the latest possible date of which was given by the siege, includes some of the highest quality archaic sculptures found in Cyprus, as well as votive steles, small altars, inscription blocks, stone tools and components, including large palm capitals, profiled cornices and false windows with balustrades. The location of the sanctuary, presumably consecrated to a powerful patron god and the Paphic Aphrodite, near the monumental northeast gate, its architectural ornamentation and the choice of motifs for the dedicatory offerings make it clear that the place of worship is of high rank and also has a close connection to the Paphic king and the elite had. Noteworthy are male statues with royal regalia and robes, which were probably only worn in cult, including a particularly prominent bearded head, which is interpreted as a ceremonial portrait of a priest-king of Paphos. His crown and hairstyle combine elements of Egyptian and Assyrian-Persian symbolism of rule
520 8# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
